Lahore (Urdu Point/Pakistan Point News – 18 March 2026) Lahore The Supreme Court (LHC) on Wednesday granted time to the Election Commission Pakistan To file its reply on the petitions seeking local government elections in Punjab on party basis.
Justice Sultan Tanveer Ahmed heard the petitions filed by Ziauddin Ansari of Jamaat-e-Islami and an opposition member of the Punjab Assembly, who objected to the move to hold local body elections on a non-partisan basis.
During the hearing, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) lawyer Imran Arif Ranjha appeared before the court and sought time to file a written response and prepare arguments.
By accepting the request, the court decided to postpone the rest of the procedures until after Eid al-Fitr.
The petition said that amendments have been made to the Punjab Local Government Act, 2017, under which local government elections are proposed to be held on a non-partisan basis.
The petitioners said the move would weaken democratic values and urged the court to direct the authorities to hold local government elections on a party basis.
