MULTAN (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 15 Mar, 2026) The traditional practice of offering ‘idi’ (money) on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr is witnessing a notable transformation in many parts of southern Punjab, with digital transactions increasingly replacing the traditional method of handing over gifts or cash in person to loved ones.

For decades, families across the region have been celebrating Eid by visiting their relatives and offering ‘Eidi’ in person. Elders give money to children, brothers give gifts to sisters, and parents send eidi (money) to their daughters who are married and living in other homes. In many families, Eidi was not limited to cash alone. They often included traditional items such as bangles, henna and sweets such as suyan, which symbolized affection and cultural warmth.

However, with the increasing use of smartphones, digital wallets and banking apps, this tradition has evolved. Instead of waiting for physical meetings, many families are now transferring Eid money online, ensuring that children and relatives receive their share immediately regardless of distance.

This trend has become particularly popular among families whose members live in different cities or even abroad. Online transfers allow parents, uncles and grandparents to send Eid money to their loved ones within seconds, maintaining the holiday spirit despite geographical barriers.

However, young recipients reported that the experience can be just as exciting as receiving cash in person. Imama, a young girl from Vihari, shared her happiness after receiving Aidi through online transfer.

“I was surprised when I suddenly received a notification on my account,” she said. “My uncle sent me Eid online. I was thrilled because it came unexpectedly, which made my Eid even more special.”

Another child, Maha, also described her happiness after receiving Eidi digitally.

“Chachu sent me Eddie through online transfer,” she said with a smile.

“I immediately checked my account and was very happy. It felt like a pleasant surprise.”

Parents and elders believe that the digital Eidiya has added more convenience while maintaining the emotional value of the tradition. Many families find that even if relatives cannot visit each other due to distance or busy schedules, they still ensure that the children get to Eid on time.

Social observers, such as Sahar Shehzadi, Director of the RA Institute while speaking to APP, emphasized that the cultural shift reflects a broader change influenced by technology and modern communication tools. While traditional Eid gatherings remain an essential part of family life, digital transformations have become a practical solution in a rapidly changing world.

She also points out that Eidi Online promotes financial awareness among children. Receiving money directly into the account encourages young recipients to learn how to manage savings and digital banking at an early age.

Despite the shift towards technology, many families still try to maintain the warmth of traditional celebrations. She added that in some families, elderly people continue to give Eidi when family members gather on Eid day, while online remittances are used for relatives living far away.

However, Sehar pointed out that the combination of tradition and technology reflects the evolving culture of Pakistani society. The essence of Eid, sharing happiness and strengthening the family Bondsremains unchanged, although the method of delivery has changed.

As Eid approaches, the growing trend of online Eid highlights how digital connectivity helps families stay emotionally connected. Whether delivered personally or transmitted by a mobile She concluded her speech by saying: Over the phone, the joy of welcoming Eid remains one of the most cherished aspects of celebrating Eid.
