
In line with World Rivers Day, celebrated every year on March 14, a rally was held at Taunsa Barrage by the Sindhu Bachao Movement (SBM), an organization of fishermen, near the mighty Indus River, on Monday.
Muzaffargarh (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 16th Mar, 2026) In line with World Rivers Day, celebrated every year on March 14, the Sindhu Bashaw Movement (SBM), an organization of fishermen, held a meeting at Taunsa Barag, on Monday, near the mighty Indus River.
The event was attended by people from different walks of life, including students, activists and journalists, who expressed their solidarity with the river-dependent communities and threw bouquets of flowers into the Indus.
Participants spoke in favor of saving fishermen and river-dependent communities, urging the government to take steps for their well-being and traditional way of life.
They said that the communities, their livelihood and their culture are linked to the Indus River.
Khadim Hussain, a member of the Sindhu Bachao Movement, said that the communities settled in the area as part of the World Bank-funded resettlement project for the Taunsa Barrage Rehabilitation Project.
Participants said the authorities should recognize fishing communities as guardians of the Indus River, and respect their right to live and earn a livelihood along the river.
The gathering concluded with a march to the western bank of the Indus River, where participants offered flowers to the river and pledged to protect it from pollution and environmental degradation.
