Lahore, March 23, 2026: The Punjab Food Authority has closed 10 confectionery and bakery units and imposed fines exceeding Rs 13.13 million on 653 outlets during a district-wide drive against adulteration, inspecting 818 bakery units and 1,478 sweet shops.

During the operation, the authorities disposed of large quantities of substandard and dangerous food items, including 830 kg of sweets and cakes, 436 broken eggs, 120 liters of oil, 531 kg of expired materials, 466 liters of juices and cold drinks, and 80 kg of other products.

The general manager said the broken and substandard eggs recovered from the bakery units were intended to be used in preparing cakes and other items.

He added that poor hygiene conditions were observed, including food storage in refrigerators that had a foul smell and were infested with fungi, and the presence of contaminated water on broken floors.

He further said that food is being prepared using used oil, while mandatory records of purchases and oil changes are also missing in many outlets.

The campaign was implemented under the guidance of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Salma Butt as part of ongoing efforts to ensure safe and quality food is available to the public.
