United Nations (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – April 1, 2026) Pakistan The killing of three Indonesian peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was described as “tragic and deeply disturbing” incidents that strike at the core of international law when the UN Security Council met in an emergency session to discuss the situation in southern Lebanon on the border with Israel.

“These are not isolated incidents,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, told the 15-member body, which met at the request of France in the wake of intensifying fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon under increasing attacks.

He said that the Council must not allow such violence against peacekeeping forces to become a normal matter, pointing out that these missions are mandated by it, and protecting them is its first responsibility.

The Pakistani envoy reviewed developments in that region, and said that the ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon led to the killing of more than 600 civilians, the displacement of more than a million people, and the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

He added, “The ongoing fighting and hostilities further exacerbate the humanitarian situation and increase the risks for civilians and peacekeepers alike.” “These developments undermine the Lebanese government’s bold steps, political decisions, and serious commitment to peace and stability.

We must not allow this. The Council must provide its full support to Lebanon.”

He said that Pakistan stands firmly with the government and people of Lebanon.

The Pakistani envoy said that the killing of Indonesian peacekeepers on March 29 and 30 is part of a disturbing pattern of attacks on UNIFIL, noting that the mission has been subjected to persistent aggressive behavior and restrictions on freedom of action.

As one of the largest troop-contributing countries, “we share this profound sense of loss” and stand in full solidarity with the government and people of Indonesia, and the families of the victims.

Ambassador Asim Ahmed said, “UN staff are neutral agents of peace.” He added, “Targeting them is a serious violation that undermines international humanitarian law.”

He said accountability was essential, and called for a prompt, comprehensive and impartial investigation to uncover the facts.

Ambassador Asim Ahmed called on all parties to exercise utmost restraint, saying: “The ultimate goal must be urgent calm, restraint, complete cessation of all hostilities and peaceful resolution of all issues to prevent further deterioration of the regional security environment.”
