Pak-China friendship turns 75 years: Commemorative ceremony held at Dhaniyur Memorial

Gilgit (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 4 April 2026) A solemn ceremony was held at the Chinese Memorial in Daniyur Gilgit on the occasion of 75 years of enduring Pak-China friendship, organized by the Overseas Chinese Association Gilgit-Baltistan. The event attracted a large number of participants from different walks of life.

Deputy Inspector General Gilgit Range Naveed Khawaja attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Wreaths were laid at the memorial, while a smartly attended police contingent provided a guard of honour.

Speakers on the occasion described Pak-China relations as timeless and rooted in mutual trust, brotherhood and common progress. Referring to the Karakoram Highway as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” they noted that its construction began in 1966 and was completed in 1978, symbolizing the strength of bilateral relations.

They stressed that during the construction of the highway, 110 Chinese engineers and workers sacrificed their lives. Among them, 88 were buried at the Chinese memorial site, while 22 remained missing due to various incidents. The ceremony is held annually in honor of their sacrifices.

The ceremony was attended by Chinese officials and representatives of the police and civil administration, as well as students and members of the public. Gifts were also distributed to individuals responsible for the maintenance of the memorial by the Overseas Chinese Association Gilgit-Baltistan and the Chinese Embassy.

The ceremony concluded with participants raising slogans in support of Pakistan-China friendship, and reiterated their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.
