Agricultural experts advised farmers to ensure that their wheat crops are harvested, threshed and stored in a timely manner, because neglect during these critical stages could lead to crop losses of up to 10 to 12 percent.

Faisalabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – March 31, 2026) Agriculture experts have advised farmers to ensure timely harvesting, threshing and storage of their wheat crops as negligence during these critical stages may exacerbate the problem. a result In return losses reach 10 to 12 percent.

Farmers should start harvesting wheat only after the crop is fully mature, a spokesman for the Agriculture (Extension) Department said here on Tuesday. He advised farmers to check the maturity of the grain by pressing it between their teeth and making a crackling sound indicating that the crop is ready for harvest.

He said that harvesting, threshing and post-harvest handling are among the most important stages in wheat production and any error in care during these stages may significantly reduce the overall production.

He urged farmers to make advance arrangements for labour, harvesters, threshers, tractors, tarpaulins or plastic covers and harvesters to ensure smooth operations. In case of harvesting through combine harvesters, the use of wheat straw choppers is also recommended for better straw and residue management, he added.

He also advised farmers to keep updating weather forecasts via television and radio before starting harvesting operations.

He added that in the event of rain, harvesting and threshing activities should be stopped immediately and resumed only after weather conditions improve, while the harvested wheat should be immediately covered with tarpaulins or covers to prevent damage.

He also recommended tying relatively smaller bundles after harvest and placing the ears in one direction.

He stressed the need for the threshing floors to remain small in size, and it is preferable to establish them in raised fields, with suitable drainage ditches around them.

Wherever possible, harvesting should be done using harvesters or harvesters to achieve efficiency and reduce losses, he said. He added that farmers should transport the harvested wheat to storage facilities without delay.

For storage, farmers must use new gunny bags which must be dried in sunlight before using them, he said.

He also advised spraying pesticides, as recommended by agricultural experts, to eliminate pests and ensure safe storage of wheat.
