Encroachment campaign continues in Islamabad without any discrimination: Senate said

ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – April 7, 2026) Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Talal Chaudhry on Tuesday informed the Senate that a sustained anti-encroachment drive in Islamabad is being implemented indiscriminately.

Responding to the summons notice raised by Shahadat Awan over setting up of tent settlements next to drains/nulas in Sector G-10/2 by unidentified persons, the minister said encroachments on more than 422 acres of land in different areas of the state have been removed. He said the process was being conducted uniformly across Islamabad, regardless of whether there were encroachments in upscale sectors or informal settlements.

Areas including GT Road, Saidpur, Islamabad Expressway and many others were part of the drive, the minister said, adding that it was not limited to Katchiabadi but also targeted illegal constructions in developed sectors.

Talal Chaudhry said that some temporary gatherings appeared during the last ten days of Ramadan along a drain, and the process slowed down due to the sanctity of the holy month.

But he assured the House of Representatives that the violations would be removed within the next few days and the campaign would continue at full speed.

He said the government follows due legal procedures, including prior notifications and warnings, before taking any action, adding that no individual will be displaced without being given the opportunity.

The minister said some encroachments had developed into commercial activities, including shops and hotels, and were not limited to low-income housing.

He said surveys had been conducted to differentiate between long-term residents and those who occupied lands for commercial gain or rented illegally built properties.

Meanwhile, Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazir Tarar assured the House of Representatives that no injustice will occur, especially towards minorities.

He said the government would ensure that all measures were taken in accordance with the law, adding that appropriate alternative arrangements would be considered.
