Lahore (Urdu Point / Pakistan Point News – March 30, 2026) Lahore The Supreme Court (LHC) on Monday sought the record of discussions held in the Punjab Assembly on the Punjab Defamation Bill, 2024.

Judge Anwar Hussain heard several petitions challenging the constitutionality of the defamation law.

During the hearing, the court questioned the necessity of the new law, noting that existing contempt of court provisions already address disrespect for the judiciary.

Lawyer Azhar Siddiq, who represents one of the petitioners, said the new law effectively creates a parallel judicial system. He added that the requirement to pay compensation in advance undermines the constitutional guarantee of a transparent trial. He asked the court to declare the new law unconstitutional and invalid.
