Islamabad, March 24, 2026 The organizer of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Ghulam Muhammad Safi, strongly condemned the Indian judiciary’s decision to sentence Hurriyat leader Asiya Andrabi to life imprisonment, and Hurriyat leaders Fehmida Sofi and Nahida Nasreen to 30 years in prison each.
He described the rulings as a violation of the principles of justice, international law and basic human rights, a statement issued here said.
Safi said the decisions not only reflect political vendetta, but also represent a continuation of what he described as systematic state repression, judicial exploitation and human rights violations in the illegally occupied Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
He stressed that the implication of Hurriyat leaders in what he described as fabricated and baseless cases, followed by the issuance of lengthy sentences, is a failed attempt to suppress the legitimate and peaceful struggle of the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination, as approved by United Nations resolutions.
He further stated that the Indian judiciary has failed to remain impartial in Kashmir-related matters and often appears to act as an instrument of the state’s narrative.
He added that the sentences issued against Andrabi, Sufi and Nasreen are clear evidence of the criminalization of the opposition in an attempt to silence the Kashmiri leadership.
Safi pointed out that history bears witness that the use of force, arrests, detention and coercive methods did not break the resolve of the Kashmiri people and did not stop their struggle.
He stressed that such actions cannot intimidate the Kashmiri leadership or public, who remain committed to continuing their movement to its logical conclusion – freedom and the realization of their right to self-determination.
The organizers of the Hurriyat Conference also appealed to the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the European Union, and international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, to immediately pay attention to the situation.
He urged them to put pressure on India to release political prisoners and ensure an end to human rights violations in the region.
He called on the international community to play an active role in resolving the Kashmir conflict in accordance with United Nations resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, stressing that delays in justice not only lead to the perpetuation of oppression, but also constitute a threat to regional peace and stability.
Safi expressed his full solidarity with Asia Andarabi, Fahmidah Sufi, Nahida Nasreen and all political prisoners, saying that the Kashmiri people will not allow their sacrifices to be in vain and will continue to move forward in their struggle with determination.
