The Punjab Agriculture Department has set a target of 0.7 million acres for early cotton cultivation in the province, a ministry spokesman said here on Sunday.
He said: “Regions Multan, Sahiwal, FaisalabadSargodha and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions are most suitable for early cotton cultivation. He added that the administration strongly recommended cultivation of only triple-gene cotton varieties for early sowing.
The spokesperson further stated that the seeds used for planting early cotton must be certified by Federalism Department of Approval and Registration Seeds must be from the pure triple gene pool.

To plant early cotton, farmers must use 2 to 3 kg of seed per acre. They should also arrange 10% additional seeds to make up for any gaps in the field, he said, adding that if the germination rate is 60%, farmers should use 5 to 6 kg of seeds per acre, while if the germination rate is 75% or higher, 4 to 5 kg of seeds should be used per acre. “The average production of early cotton planting is 50 to 60 million per acre,” he said.
