The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to accelerate a series of short- and long-term measures to improve Islamabad’s water supply system, including the construction of about 100 rainwater recharge wells, 20 water storage tanks, and stricter enforcement of rooftop rainwater harvesting.

Islamabad, March 25, 2026 The Capital Development Authority has decided to accelerate a series of short- and long-term measures to improve Islamabad’s water supply system, including the construction of about 100 rainwater recharge wells, 20 water storage tanks, and stricter enforcement of rooftop rainwater harvesting.

The decisions were reviewed at a meeting held at the CDA headquarters on Wednesday chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

The meeting was attended by the Community Development Authority blackboard Member for Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafez, Member for Finance Tahir Naeem, Member for Environment Asfandyar Baloch, Director General of Water Islamabad Imran Ali Zaidi and other concerned officials.

The officials briefed the meeting on the progress made in various water-related projects and initiatives in the region Federalism capital. The meeting was informed that work is underway to rehabilitate and modernize water works, connection pipelines, water treatment plants and water pumps.

The participants were also told that the installation of SCADA system and flow meters is underway to introduce a modern monitoring mechanism to the capital’s water supply system.

The main focus of the meeting was rainwater storage and groundwater recharge. About 100 wells will be built to recharge rainwater at various locations in Islamabad to help raise groundwater levels and reduce rainwater wastage, officials said.

In addition, about 20 water tanks will be built in different parts of the city to store rainwater.

The meeting was informed that rooftop rainwater harvesting has already been made mandatory under the CDA building regulations.

Chairman Randhawa directed relevant authorities to ensure strict compliance of the requirements across the capital.

The Chairman of the Community Development Authority also reviewed the mechanism for providing water tanker services and public complaints.

The meeting was informed that a dashboard-based system has been created to improve tanker operations and address water-related complaints more effectively.

The meeting also discussed progress on dam projects in Islamabad. Officials said that the feasibility study for the Shudra Dam has been completed and the design phase is in its final stages.

The feasibility study for the Dotara Dam is also ongoing and is expected to be completed by May 2026.

The progress made in establishing three sewage treatment plants along the Korang Nullah was also reviewed.

The meeting was informed that the project will be implemented on the basis of EPC and design hire process advisor It was underway.

Participants were also informed that the PC-I project had been approved for 11 wetlands in Islamabad, while wetland site selection was ongoing. Work has already begun in two wetland areas in collaboration with FDO.

President Randhawa directed the departments concerned to ensure clear timelines for all water-related projects and initiatives so that they can be completed without delay.

He also directed officials to ensure timely delivery of water bills to consumers, and ordered the establishment of a mechanism to ensure that bills are delivered every month without delay.

Speaking on the occasion, Randhawa said that an independent water agency has been established in Islamabad to find permanent solutions to water issues and modernize the water supply system in the capital.

He said the measures aim to make Islamabad’s water supply system more efficient, transparent and effective.
