The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) warns against requesting physical copies, saying that both are the same

Islamabad: (Urdu Point / Urdu Point / Pakistan Point News – March 13, 2026) National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Prompt on Friday government Offices, public and financial institutions, and telecommunications operators to accept digital ID cards as legally valid, with the caveat of requiring physical copies of the National Identity Card (CNIC).

NADRA stressed in its statement that digital ID cards carry same Legal status as traditional Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). The authority noted that some offices still require physical cards or photocopies, a practice that conflicts with applicable laws and regulations.

This guidance is part of NADRA’s ongoing efforts to promote digitalization and ensure secure, efficient and legally recognized identity verification across Pakistan.

The authority explained that under NADRA, Regulations 9 and 10 provide full legal recognition of digital identity credentials, confirming them as valid proof of identity.

NADRA said the adoption of digital ID cards reduces the need for unnecessary CNIC copies and enhances the protection of citizens’ personal data. It also helps prevent misuse of identifying information.

The authority urged everyone Relevant institutions to ensure compliance with the directive. Citizens facing difficulties in recognizing their digital identities have been advised to file complaints through NADRA’s official complaints management system.
