ECP sets March 12 as deadline for submitting city maps in case local elections are delayed

The case was taken up by a five-member committee of the EC, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.

EC officials informed the bench that three letters had been sent to the Home Secretary seeking details on delimitation of city corporations, number of union councils, maps, and necessary amendments to the law, but no response had been received.

Thereafter, it directed the Central Election Commission to issue a contempt note to the Home Minister.

Chief Secretary Punjab, Secretary Local Government Punjab, Additional Secretary Home Ministry and Chief Commissioner Islamabad appeared before the committee.

The chief secretary of Punjab told the jury that the provincial government introduced constituency rules and delimitation order, which specifies the number of union councils in city corporations, municipal corporations, municipal committees and tehsil boards.

Maps and other data will be submitted by March 12, 2026, while a notice of election rules will be issued soon.

After seriously noting the lack of response, the European Commission ordered a notice to be issued to the Home Secretary, warning of the possibility of contempt proceedings being initiated.

Chief Commissioner Islamabad assured the committee that city corporation maps would be provided within a week.

The European Court postponed the case until Tuesday, March 10.
